Hodge Hits Dramatic 98th-Minute Equaliser as Tondela Deny Gil Vicente

CD Tondela and Gil Vicente FC shared the points in a dramatic 2–2 draw on Primeira Liga Matchday 29, with Joe Hodge striking in the 98th minute to cancel out what had looked like a late winner for the visitors.

The hosts started brightly and took the lead on 15 minutes. Rony Lopes found the breakthrough for Tondela, finishing a move that put them 1–0 ahead and rewarded their early pressure.

Gil Vicente hit back before the half-hour mark. Murilo converted from the penalty spot in the 29th minute, levelling the match at 1–1 and shifting the momentum going into the break.

The second half was scrappy and increasingly tense, reflected in a flurry of yellow cards. Tondela’s Christian Marques had already gone into the book on seven minutes, and further cautions followed for Sie Ouattara, Lucas Cañizars, Joao Silva, Bebeto and Rodrigo Conceição. Gil Vicente’s Murilo and Jonathan Buatu were also booked as tempers rose in the closing stages.

Both coaches turned to their benches in search of a winner. Tondela introduced Makan Aïko, Sphephelo Sithole, Arjen van der Heide, Jordan Siebatcheu and Tiago Manso, while Gil Vicente brought on Martín Fernández Benítez, Carlos Eduardo and Joelson Fernandes.

The visitors thought they had stolen all three points right at the end of normal time. In the 90th minute, substitute Carlos Eduardo finished clinically after being set up by fellow substitute Joelson Fernandes, putting Gil Vicente 2–1 in front.

Tondela, however, refused to accept defeat. Deep into stoppage time, in the 90+8th minute, Joe Hodge struck to make it 2–2 and salvage a precious point for the home side.
