Colorado Rapids SC produced a ruthless attacking display to defeat Houston Dynamo 6–2 in MLS regular-season action on matchday 7, powered by braces from Kosi Thompson and Rafael Navarro.
The hosts started quickly. In the 5th minute, Kosi Thompson opened the scoring after being set up by Dante Sealy to make it 1–0. Colorado doubled their advantage in the 17th minute when Joshua Atencio found the net, finishing a move created by Rafael Navarro.
Thompson struck again eight minutes after the restart, scoring in the 53rd minute to push the lead to 3–0 and put Colorado firmly in control.
Houston Dynamo briefly threatened a comeback in the 69th minute. Lawrence Ennali pulled one back, assisted by Guilherme, to reduce the deficit to 3–1. However, any hopes of a turnaround were quickly extinguished. Just four minutes later, in the 73rd minute, Navarro restored Colorado’s three-goal cushion, slotting home after a pass from substitute Georgi Minoungou to make it 4–1.
Late drama in stoppage time further inflated the scoreline. An own goal by Houston’s Felipe in the 90th minute plus one pushed the Rapids’ tally to five, before Guilherme responded with a goal for Dynamo at 90+3 to make it 5–2. Colorado had the final word, though, as Navarro calmly converted a penalty at 90+5 to complete his brace and seal a resounding 6–2 victory.
Discipline played a minor role, with yellow cards shown to Houston’s Agustin Resch in the 77th minute and Colorado’s Atencio in the 89th minute. Both sides also made a series of substitutions, including the introductions of Keegan Rosenberry, Héctor Herrera, Ibrahim Aliyu and others.
