Southampton FC produced a composed second-half comeback to defeat Derby County FC 2–1 in the Championship on Saturday, strengthening their position near the top end of the table on matchday 42.
Derby struck first on 38 minutes when Carlton Morris found the net to give the visitors a 1–0 lead. His finish put Southampton under pressure heading into the break, with the home side needing a response after falling behind.
The turnaround began just past the hour mark. In the 62nd minute, Léo Scienza levelled the score for Southampton, finishing a move created by Finn Azaz, who provided the assist to make it 1–1.
Only seven minutes later, the hosts completed the comeback. Defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis rose to the occasion in the 69th minute, scoring what proved to be the winner after being set up by Ryan Manning. His goal flipped the match in Southampton’s favour and put Derby on the back foot for the remainder of the contest.
Derby’s attempts to stem the tide included an early substitution, with Oscar Fraulo replacing Bobby Clark after just nine minutes, and a triple change around the 66th–67th minute mark as Owen Eames, Craig Forsyth and Sondre Langås were all introduced. Southampton responded with attacking changes of their own, bringing on Kuryu Matsuki and Cyle Larin in the 64th minute before later introducing Samuel Edozie, Shea Charles and Nathan Wood-Gordon.
Discipline briefly became an issue for Derby, as Dion Sanderson and Oscar Fraulo both received yellow cards in the 53rd and 55th minutes respectively. Southampton’s Cyle Larin was booked late on in the 90th minute as the home side protected their narrow lead.
