Southampton hit five past Wrexham to strengthen Championship push
Southampton FC powered to a convincing 5–1 win away to Wrexham AFC on Championship matchday 41, producing a ruthless attacking performance with five different scorers.
The visitors struck first on 12 minutes when Kuryu Matsuki opened the scoring, finishing after a pass from Finn Azaz. Southampton doubled their advantage in the 22nd minute as Flynn Downes made it 2–0, putting Wrexham under serious pressure early on.
Wrexham responded just after the half-hour mark. In the 34th minute, Josh Windass pulled one back, converting after being set up by Kieffer Moore to reduce the deficit to 2–1 and briefly shift the momentum. Home defender Callum Doyle went into the book three minutes later, underlining the intensity of the contest.
Any hopes of a Wrexham comeback faded after the interval. On 61 minutes, Cyle Larin restored Southampton’s two-goal cushion with the visitors’ third of the night. Wrexham turned to their bench from the 72nd minute onwards, but it was Southampton’s changes that proved more effective.
Substitute Ross Stewart added a fourth in the 81st minute, finishing from a Welington assist. Just two minutes later, Azaz capped a standout display with Southampton’s fifth goal, this time converting from a Shea Charles pass. Azaz was booked shortly before scoring, one of several yellow cards shown in a competitive second half that also saw cautions for Jack Stephens, Welington and Wrexham substitute Ryan Longman.
Both managers made a flurry of late substitutions as the game wound down, but Southampton’s early control and clinical edge had long since settled the outcome.
