Melbourne City Edge Mariners 2–1 in A-League Matchday 17 Clash

Melbourne City FC secured a 2–1 victory over Central Coast Mariners FC on Matchday 17 of the A League regular season, holding off a late surge from the visitors on 7 April 2026.

The hosts took control in the first half, breaking the deadlock in the 22nd minute. Andreas Kuen finished off a well-worked move, with Zane Schreiber providing the assist to put Melbourne City 1–0 up.

Central Coast responded after the interval with a triple substitution on 54 minutes, introducing Oliver Lavale, Sabit James and James Donachie in search of a way back into the contest. Lavale soon found his way into the referee’s book with a yellow card in the 57th minute, while Schreiber was also cautioned for Melbourne City five minutes later.

City doubled their advantage in the 67th minute through substitute Andrew Nabbout. Brought on just a minute earlier, Nabbout made an immediate impact by converting a chance created by Daniel Arzani, giving the home side a seemingly comfortable 2–0 lead.

Both coaches continued to rotate their squads, with further changes from the 73rd minute onwards as the tempo remained high. Central Coast finally found a response deep into stoppage time. In the 90+4th minute, Ali Auglah pulled one back for the Mariners, finishing from a pass by Sabit James to set up a tense finale. However, Melbourne City saw out the remaining moments to claim all three points.
