Girona Edge Villarreal Thanks to Pau Navarro Own Goal
Girona FC secured a narrow 1–0 victory over Villarreal CF in the Primera Division on Monday, with an own goal from Pau Navarro proving decisive on matchday 30.
The only goal arrived in first-half stoppage time. Villarreal defender Pau Navarro inadvertently turned the ball into his own net in the 45th minute plus one, handing Girona a crucial advantage just before the interval. The strike put the hosts 1–0 up, a lead they preserved through the second half.
Discipline played its part in the contest. Villarreal picked up two bookings, with Santiago Mouriño cautioned in the 21st minute and Alfonso Pedraza shown yellow in the 77th minute. Girona received cautions of their own after the break, as Vitor Reis (53′) and Fran Beltrán (80′) went into the referee’s book.
Both coaches turned to their benches in search of control and fresh legs. Girona were forced into an early change when Vladyslav Vanat made way for Abel Ruiz after just 12 minutes. In the second half, Daley Blind and Iván Martín were replaced by Alejandro Francés and Thomas Lemar respectively on 74 minutes, while Arnau Martinez and Azzedine Ounahi came off late for Hugo Rincón and Casals in the 85th minute.
Villarreal made a triple substitution on 70 minutes, introducing Alfonso González, Alex Freeman and Tajon Buchanan for Alberto Moleiro, Santiago Mouriño and Nicolas Pépé. Sergi Cardona later replaced the booked Pedraza in the 80th minute as the visitors pushed for an equaliser that never came.
Beyond the recorded goal, bookings and substitutions, detailed match statistics and further in-game incidents are not available from the current data. The result, however, stands as a valuable home win for Girona over Villarreal in Spain’s top flight.
