Vipotnik and Conway star as Swansea and Middlesbrough share penalty-heavy draw
Swansea City AFC and Middlesbrough FC played out a dramatic 2–2 draw in the Championship on Matchday 41, with three penalties and a pair of standout attacking performances defining a finely balanced contest.
Middlesbrough struck first on 12 minutes. Alex Bangura finished off a move created by Tommy Conway, giving the visitors an early 1–0 lead and briefly silencing the home crowd. Bangura’s afternoon, however, was cut short when he was replaced by Finley Munroe in the 34th minute.
Swansea responded strongly and were level by the 20th minute. Zan Vipotnik converted from the spot to make it 1–1, and the striker completed a first-half brace deep into stoppage time. Another Swansea penalty in the 45+4th minute was coolly dispatched by Vipotnik, turning the game around and sending the hosts into the break 2–1 up.
The second half featured a flurry of substitutions as both managers looked to shift the momentum. Swansea introduced Marko Stamenic, Ronald and Adam Idah in a triple change on 56 minutes, while Middlesbrough made a triple switch of their own on 66 minutes, bringing on Sontje Hansen, Mamadou Kaly Sene and Dael Fry.
Middlesbrough found their route back into the match from the spot. In the 75th minute Conway, who had earlier assisted the opener, converted a penalty to level the score at 2–2. His influence was felt at both ends, as he later collected a yellow card in the 90th minute in a match that also saw bookings for Riley McGree, Gonçalo Franco, Alan Browne and Ji-sung Eom.
Further late substitutions, including Joel Ward and Malick Yalcouyé for Swansea and Alex Gilbert for Middlesbrough, could not produce a winner, and the points were shared. Detailed information on non-scoring chances, overall statistics and tactical setups was not available at the time of writing.
