Late Ayew Equaliser Denies Sheffield Wednesday in Draw with Leicester
Sheffield Wednesday FC were forced to settle for a 1–1 draw against promotion-chasing Leicester City FC in Championship matchday 41, as Jordan Ayew’s late goal cancelled out Jerry Yates’ early strike.
The hosts made a dream start, taking the lead in just the 2nd minute. Jerry Yates finished clinically after being set up by Gabriel Otegbayo, giving Wednesday immediate momentum and a 1–0 advantage that they carried deep into the second half.
With Leicester searching for a response, both managers turned to their benches. Wednesday introduced Olaf Kobacki for Nathaniel Chalobah on 62 minutes, while Leicester made a triple change around the 69th minute, including the introduction of Jordan Ayew for Divine Mukasa and Jannik Vestergaard for Jamaal Lascelles. Bobby Reid also came on for Oliver Skipp as the visitors chased parity.
Substitutions continued as Liam Palmer was replaced by Sean Fusire for the hosts on 74 minutes, and Stephy Mavididi made way for Jeremy Monga for Leicester five minutes later. Jamal Lowe and goalscorer Yates were withdrawn on 80 minutes, with Jarvis Thornton and Charlie McNeill entering the fray for Wednesday.
Leicester’s pressure finally told in the 84th minute. Patson Daka provided the assist and Ayew, one of the visitors’ substitutes, found the net to level the score at 1–1 and frustrate the home side’s hopes of a vital win.
Patson Daka then departed in the 89th minute for Dujuan Richards as Leicester looked to push on late, but no further goals followed and the points were shared.
