Wareham Brace Fires Exeter City to Convincing Win Over Doncaster
Exeter City produced a confident home performance to defeat Doncaster Rovers 3–0 in League One on matchday 42, powered by a brace from Jayden Wareham and a second-half strike from substitute Josh Magennis.
Exeter took control shortly before the interval. In the 42nd minute, Wareham opened the scoring, finishing after being set up by Reece Cole to give the hosts a 1–0 lead. It capped an eventful first half for the forward, who had earlier received a yellow card in the 20th minute.
Doncaster were forced into early changes, with Neill Byrne replaced by Jamie Sterry on 29 minutes and Matty Pearson making way for Elliot Lee eight minutes later, but the visitors struggled to turn the reshuffle into attacking threat.
The game swung further Exeter’s way after the break. On 63 minutes, managerially-timed substitutions saw Ryan Rydel and Magennis introduced for Ethan Brierley and Carlos Mendes Gomes. The move paid off quickly when Magennis struck in the 69th minute, extending the advantage to 2–0.
Doncaster responded with a triple substitution on the same minute, bringing on Jordan Gibson, Jay McGrath and Hakeeb Adelakun for Harry Clifton, Ben Close and Glenn Middleton, but they could not find a way back into the contest.
Exeter then wrapped up the points on 84 minutes. Wareham grabbed his second of the afternoon, this time supplied by fellow substitute Luca Woodhouse, to complete a 3–0 scoreline and underline the hosts’ superiority.
Further Exeter changes saw Woodhouse and Jack Aitchison come on in the 74th minute, with Kevin McDonald introduced late on for Charlie Cummins in the 89th minute as the home side comfortably saw out the win.
