Vitinha has revealed that Cristiano Ronaldo remains a major source of inspiration for Portugal as the squad prepares for the 2026 World Cup.
The Portugal midfielder says the team are motivated not only by the dream of winning the tournament, but also by the chance to do it alongside and for their legendary captain.
Ronaldo, now playing for Al Nassr in Saudi Arabia, remains one of the most important figures in the Portugal dressing room. Although he is in the later stages of his career, his influence on the national team remains huge.
Speaking to FIFA, Vitinha praised Ronaldo’s professionalism and said sharing a dressing room with him continues to be a privilege.
“He’s one of the greatest players in history,” Vitinha said. “I’m very proud to share the dressing room with him, learn from him and witness his professionalism every day. I hope we can win the World Cup with him and for him as well.”
Vitinha also explained what makes Ronaldo such a powerful example for the rest of the squad.
“Mainly the way he approaches football: extremely professional and serious,” he added. “He leaves nothing to chance. He steps onto the pitch knowing he is 100 per cent ready and that he has done everything possible for the team.”
Portugal will head to North America with high expectations and a squad full of talent. But Vitinha knows winning the World Cup will require patience, discipline and focus from the opening match.
“We just want to win,” he said. “We know it will be difficult, but we also know there’s no point thinking too much about the final or lifting the trophy right now, even if that’s our objective.”
The midfielder stressed that Portugal must take the tournament one step at a time, starting with the group stage.
“We have to take things step by step. That’s always the best approach. Right now, our focus has to be on the group stage. If we do well there, then we can start looking further ahead.”
For Ronaldo, the 2026 World Cup could represent one final chance to chase the only major trophy missing from his international career. For Portugal, it is another opportunity to turn a golden generation into world champions.
