Manuel Neuer is reportedly set to be Germany’s first-choice goalkeeper at the 2026 World Cup, with Julian Nagelsmann said to have informed Oliver Baumann of his decision.
According to Bild, the Germany coach called the Hoffenheim goalkeeper directly to explain that he is not currently planned as the starting option for next summer’s tournament.
The decision is a major blow for Baumann, who had been one of Germany’s most reliable players during World Cup qualifying. The 35-year-old delivered consistent performances and appeared to be in line for a long-awaited chance as the national team’s No. 1.
Instead, Neuer is expected to return to the role he held for so many years. The Bayern Munich veteran remains one of the biggest names in German football, and his recent form has reportedly convinced Nagelsmann that he is still the strongest option.
Baumann accepts setback with class

Although the decision will be painful, Baumann has responded professionally.
According to the report, he told Nagelsmann during the call that he would remain fully available for Germany, even if that means travelling to the World Cup as a challenger rather than the first-choice goalkeeper.
That reaction underlines Baumann’s importance to the squad beyond his performances on the pitch. His experience and attitude could still make him a valuable figure in the tournament group.
Neuer fitness concern before key fixtures
While Neuer’s return as Germany’s No. 1 would be a major statement, it also carries some risk.
The 40-year-old recently had to leave the pitch early due to problems with his left calf, an area that has caused him issues before. The setback has raised questions about whether his body can handle the demands of another major tournament.

Bayern are taking a cautious approach. Neuer arrived at the club’s training ground on Monday morning but did not train with the squad. Instead, he received treatment inside the performance centre while his teammates worked on the pitch.
There is some positive news, though. Scans have reportedly ruled out a structural muscle injury, such as a torn fibre, meaning a quick return remains possible.
Neuer could still feature in Bayern’s DFB Cup final against VfB Stuttgart this Saturday at Berlin’s Olympic Stadium. A strong performance there would give him the chance to send a clear message before Germany’s World Cup preparations intensify.
For Nagelsmann, the decision appears to be made. Neuer is back in line to lead Germany from goal, while Baumann must now decide how to turn disappointment into motivation.
