Antonio Rudiger is expected to remain at Real Madrid after accepting the club’s proposal for a contract extension.
According to AS, the German defender has agreed to continue for one more season, keeping him at the Santiago Bernabeu for the 2026-27 campaign. Rudiger had initially hoped for a two-year extension, but Real Madrid’s policy with veteran players meant the club only offered a shorter renewal.
The 31-year-old has decided to prioritise staying in Madrid over the length of the contract, ending speculation about a possible summer exit.
Rudiger has become an important figure in Real Madrid’s defence since joining from Chelsea in 2022. After initially having to fight for a regular starting place, he has grown into one of the club’s most reliable and respected centre-backs.

His decision comes after a difficult season physically. Rudiger played through persistent pain for several months before eventually undergoing surgery. He also travelled to London for medical consultations and followed a specific recovery plan to deal with the issue.
Despite those struggles, the defender continued to make himself available when Madrid needed him. That commitment was highly valued inside the club, especially during a season in which defensive depth was tested.
Rudiger has shown signs of returning to his best form in the closing stages of the campaign, giving Madrid confidence that he can still perform at the highest level.
The centre-back has also rejected interest from elsewhere in recent years. That included a lucrative proposal from Saudi Arabia, which would have offered a major salary increase.
However, Rudiger’s priority has remained clear. He wants to continue competing for major trophies with Real Madrid and still believes he has important targets to achieve in the Spanish capital.
For Madrid, keeping Rudiger provides experience, leadership and defensive strength for another season. For the player, it is another chance to add to his legacy at one of the biggest clubs in world football.
