Ten-Man Benfica Let Two-Goal Lead Slip in Famalicão Thriller

FC Famalicão produced a stirring second-half comeback to hold Sport Lisboa e Benfica to a 2-2 draw on Saturday, as the visitors saw a two-goal lead and a man advantage slip away in a dramatic Primeira Liga clash on matchday 32.

Benfica struck first from the penalty spot in the 12th minute, when Andreas Schjelderup converted to give the Lisbon side an early 1-0 lead. The visitors doubled their advantage just seven minutes later. Schjelderup turned provider in the 19th minute, setting up Richard Rios to make it 2-0, putting Benfica seemingly in full control.

The match swung sharply after the break. In the 55th minute, Benfica captain Nicolás Otamendi was sent off, leaving the visitors to defend their lead with ten men. Famalicão gradually grew into the game and halved the deficit in the 67th minute, when Mathias De Amorin finished a move created by Leonardo Realpe.

Coach adjustments soon paid off for the hosts. Introduced in the 72nd minute, substitute Umar Abubakar made a decisive impact. Just six minutes after coming on, he struck the equaliser in the 78th minute, with De Amorin this time turning provider to level the score at 2-2.

The closing stages were tense. Famalicão’s Gustavo Sa and Rodrigo Pinheiro received yellow cards, while Benfica goalkeeper Anatolii Trubin and Rios were also booked in stoppage time as both sides battled to find a winner that never came.

Other detailed match statistics, lineups and minute-by-minute events were not available at the time of writing.
