Late Vargas Strike Lifts Charlotte FC to 2–1 Win at NYCFC

Charlotte FC secured an impressive away victory with a 2–1 win over New York City FC on MLS matchday 8, settling the contest through second-half goals from Idan Gorno and Kerwin Vargas before a late reply from the hosts.

In a tightly contested first half, neither side managed to break the deadlock, though the tone was set early by disciplined – and occasionally rugged – defending. Charlotte midfielder Brandt Bronico entered the referee’s book after just three minutes, while New York City defender Raul Gustavo followed with a yellow card in the 17th minute.

The breakthrough came shortly after the interval. In the 54th minute, Charlotte’s Idan Gorno made it 1–0, finishing a move created by Harry Toffolo. The goal shifted momentum in favour of the visitors, who soon managed their bench to protect the lead. Tim Ream was replaced by Andrew Privett at half-time, and later on, attacking options were refreshed with Kerwin Vargas entering for Rodolfo Aloko in the 69th minute.

Charlotte doubled their advantage right on 90 minutes. Vargas, having come off the bench, delivered what proved to be the decisive second goal, assisted by Pep Biel, to put the visitors 2–0 ahead and seemingly out of sight.

New York City FC, however, refused to leave empty-handed. Deep into stoppage time, in the 90+3rd minute, Nicolás Fernández Marcau pulled one back for the home side, converting after a pass from Hannes Wolf to make it 2–1. Despite a flurry of late bookings – including cautions for Andrew Privett, Nathan Byrne, Charlotte goalkeeper Kristijan Kahlina, and NYCFC’s Keaton Parks – the visitors held firm.

Charlotte’s mix of clinical finishing and timely substitutions ultimately decided the regular-season clash, while NYCFC were left to rue a late rally that came just too late. Detailed data on lineups, shots, and other match statistics were not available at the time of writing.
