Late Burcu Equaliser Rescues Point for Union Berlin Against Köln
1. FC Union Berlin mounted a spirited late comeback to earn a 2–2 draw at home to 1. FC Köln on Bundesliga Matchday 32, clawing back from a two-goal deficit thanks to strikes from Tom Rothe and substitute Livan Burcu.
Köln took control of the contest in the first half. In the 33rd minute, Marius Bülter opened the scoring for the visitors, finishing after a pass from Gian-Luca Waldschmidt to make it 1–0. Shortly before that, Eric Martel had gone into the referee’s book, one of several cautions in a competitive encounter.
Early in the second half, Köln appeared to put the game out of Union’s reach. Said El Mala doubled the advantage in the 61st minute, converting with support from Kristoffer Lund to push the score to 2–0 in favour of the away side.
Union responded with a triple substitution on 58 minutes, introducing Livan Burcu, Andrej Ilic and Christopher Trimmel. The changes helped tilt the momentum. In the 73rd minute, Tom Rothe pulled one back for the hosts, finishing after a delivery from Trimmel to cut the deficit to 2–1.
The closing stages were frantic. Köln made several substitutions of their own, including the introductions of Felipe Chavez, Youssoupha Niang, Jan Thielmann, Linton Maina and Joël Schmied as they tried to preserve their lead. Union, however, kept pushing and were rewarded in the 89th minute when Burcu found the equaliser to level the score at 2–2. Moments later he was booked, one of three late yellow cards along with cautions for Köln goalkeeper Marvin Schwäbe and Union’s Andreas Kerwin.
The draw leaves both Union Berlin and Köln sharing the points in this late-season Bundesliga clash.
