Castellón strike late to sink Burgos and boost Segunda División push
CD Castellón earned a valuable 3–1 home win over Burgos CF on Saturday, using a powerful late surge to decide a tight Segunda División contest on matchday 36.
The hosts made a flying start in the 9th minute. Ousmane Camara finished off an early move for Castellón, converting after a pass from Lucas Alcázar to give his side a 1–0 advantage.
Burgos responded from the penalty spot in the 21st minute. Curro Sánchez stepped up to equalise, making it 1–1 and briefly swinging the momentum towards the visitors.
The first half grew increasingly tense, with Castellón picking up a flurry of yellow cards for Beñat Gerenabarrena, Fabrizio Brignani and Alberto before the break. Burgos saw Sergio González booked shortly after half-time, while Curro Sánchez and Camara were both cautioned in the 62nd minute as tempers threatened to rise.
Both coaches turned to their benches, and the changes proved decisive for Castellón. In the 71st minute, Awer Mabil entered the pitch, and the Australian international helped change the game’s rhythm in the final stages.
The breakthrough finally arrived in the 79th minute. Álex Calatrava restored Castellón’s lead with a well-taken goal, assisted by Mabil, to make it 2–1. Just two minutes later, the roles were reversed: Mabil struck Castellón’s third in the 81st minute after a pass from Adam Jakobsen, effectively killing off Burgos’ hopes of a comeback.
The hosts managed the closing stages despite another yellow card for Marc-Olivier Doué in stoppage time, with further substitutions used to protect the advantage. No additional detailed statistics or match events beyond goals, cards and substitutions were available at the time of writing.
The victory keeps Castellón in a strong position as the Segunda División regular season enters its decisive stretch, while Burgos leave empty-handed after briefly threatening an upset from the spot.
