Estudiantes de La Plata produced a late turnaround to defeat CA Unión 2-1 on matchday 14 of the Liga Profesional Apertura, with substitute Mikel Amondarain sealing the points in second-half stoppage time.
The visitors struck first in the 36th minute. Marcelo Estigarribia finished off a move created by Julián Palacios, giving Unión a 1-0 lead and putting Estudiantes under pressure before the interval.
Estudiantes made key changes early in the second half, introducing Tiago Palacios and Mikel Amondarain in the 56th minute. Just three minutes later, the hosts found their equaliser. In the 59th minute, Fabricio Pérez Escudero levelled the score at 1-1, converting after good work from Brian Aguirre, who provided the assist.
The match grew increasingly tense, reflected in a flurry of yellow cards. José Sosa was booked as early as the 4th minute for Estudiantes, while Unión’s Mateo Del Blanco saw yellow on the half-hour mark. Joaquin Pereyra and Tiago Palacios were also cautioned for the home side, with Estigarribia, Brahian Cuello, Matías Mansilla and Juan Pablo Luduena all booked for Unión in a heated closing stretch, alongside a late caution for Aguirre.
With the game seemingly heading for a draw, Estudiantes found the decisive moment in added time. In the 90+3rd minute, Amondarain struck to make it 2-1, completing the comeback and rewarding the hosts’ second-half push. His goal, coming after his introduction from the bench, proved to be the difference in a tightly contested encounter.
Both sides used their full complement of substitutions as the match wore on, but no further goals arrived after Amondarain’s winner. Detailed data on shots, possession and other match statistics was not available at the time of writing.
