Abraham’s Stoppage-Time Winner Seals 4–3 Thriller for Aston Villa Against Sunderland
Tammy Abraham’s stoppage-time strike gave Aston Villa FC a dramatic 4–3 victory over Sunderland AFC in a Premier League classic on matchday 33.
Villa flew out of the blocks, taking the lead inside two minutes. Ollie Watkins finished from close range after being picked out by John McGinn to make it 1–0. Sunderland hit back quickly, though, with Chris Rigg levelling in the ninth minute following good work from Noah Sadiki.
Watkins restored Villa’s advantage in the 36th minute, converting a move involving Ian Maatsen to put the hosts 2–1 up at the break. Seconds after half-time, Villa appeared to take full control. Morgan Rogers struck in the 46th minute, finishing a move he started and latching onto a pass from Watkins for 3–1.
Sunderland bossed the changes around the hour mark, introducing Daniel Ballard, Trai Hume and Chemsdine Talbi on 63 minutes as they chased a route back into the game. Villa responded with a double change on 70 minutes, bringing on Emiliano Buendía and Lucas Digne, before Tammy Abraham and Jadon Sancho entered on 80 minutes for Watkins and McGinn.
The visitors’ late push sparked a stunning finale. Hume cut the deficit to 3–2 with an 86th-minute goal, and moments later Wilson Isidor completed an improbable comeback, making it 3–3 in the 87th minute after being teed up by Enzo Le Fée.
But Villa had the final say deep into stoppage time. In the 90+3rd minute, Digne’s delivery found Abraham, who kept his composure to score the decisive fourth and snatch all three points for the hosts.
Noah Sadiki, Nordi Mukiele, Amadou Onana and Daniel Ballard were booked during an increasingly tense closing spell. Aside from goals, substitutions and bookings, detailed match statistics and further events were not available at the time of writing.
