Schick Brace Fires Leverkusen to Derby Win at Köln
Patrik Schick delivered a decisive brace as Bayer 04 Leverkusen claimed a 2–1 away victory over 1. FC Köln in the Rhine derby on Bundesliga matchday 31.
Leverkusen struck first shortly before the break. In the 43rd minute, Schick converted a penalty to give the visitors a 1–0 lead, sending Köln into half-time on the back foot. Earlier in the game, Edmond Tapsoba had received a yellow card for Leverkusen in the 10th minute, underlining the derby intensity.
Just after the restart, Schick doubled Leverkusen’s advantage. In the 52nd minute he finished a move created by Nathan Tella, whose assistance set up the Czech forward to make it 2–0 and put the visitors firmly in control.
Köln responded with a wave of substitutions around the hour mark, including the introduction of Alessio Castro-Montes and Jan Thielmann. A further double change in the 72nd minute brought on Gian-Luca Waldschmidt and Felipe Chavez, and it was Waldschmidt who pulled the hosts back into the contest.
In the 77th minute, Waldschmidt scored for Köln to reduce the deficit to 2–1, finishing after good work from Said El Mala. The goal set up a tense closing phase, during which Köln pushed for an equaliser while Leverkusen turned to their bench, bringing on Malik Tillman, Eliesse Ben Seghir, Nicolás Ezequiel Fernández, Arthur Augusto and later Loïc Bade to help see out the result.
The match also saw yellow cards for Ísak Jóhannesson of Köln just before half-time and Leverkusen goalkeeper Janis Blaswich in the 90th minute. No further goals followed, and Leverkusen held on for an important derby win.
