Newcastle See Off Brighton 3–1 to Strengthen Late-Season Push
Newcastle United boosted their Premier League prospects with a 3–1 victory over Brighton & Hove Albion on matchday 35, powered by early goals from William Osula and Dan Burn before Harvey Barnes struck in added time.
The hosts made a fast start. On 12 minutes, Newcastle United went in front when William Osula finished after being set up by Jacob Murphy, capping an incisive move to make it 1–0. Twelve minutes later, Dan Burn doubled the advantage, converting after a pass from Bruno Guimarães to put Newcastle firmly in control at 2–0.
Brighton were forced into an early change on 18 minutes as Joël Veltman replaced Mats Wieffer. Veltman later went into the book in the 22nd minute, followed by another yellow card for Kaoru Mitoma on 39 minutes, underlining a difficult first half for the visitors.
After the break, Brighton found a route back into the game. In the 61st minute, Jack Hinshelwood pulled one back, scoring from a Danny Welbeck assist to reduce the deficit to 2–1 and briefly shift the momentum.
Newcastle responded with a triple substitution in the 68th minute, introducing Lewis Hall, Harvey Barnes and Yoane Wissa for Joe Willock, Murphy and Osula. Burn picked up a yellow card on 53 minutes, while Sandro Tonali was also booked late on as tempers rose. Brighton manager Fabian Hürzeler and Wissa both received cautions in the 87th minute, with Jan Paul van Hecke also booked on 90 minutes.
With Brighton chasing an equaliser, Newcastle sealed the points deep into stoppage time. Harvey Barnes struck in the 90+5th minute to make it 3–1, ending any hopes of a Brighton comeback.
