Late Surge Sees San Jose Earthquakes Crush Austin FC 5–1 in MLS Rout
San Jose Earthquakes produced a stunning second-half comeback to defeat Austin FC 5–1 in MLS regular-season action on Matchday 9, overturning an early setback with five unanswered goals.
The visitors struck first on 9 minutes when Joseph Rosales put Austin FC ahead with a regular-play finish, giving the Texas side an ideal start. San Jose were unable to find an equaliser before the break and went into half-time trailing, with goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr. booked for the hosts in the 45th minute.
The match turned decisively after the interval. In the 58th minute, Jack Jasinski levelled the score for San Jose, finishing a move created by Niko Tsakiris to make it 1–1. Jasinski later received a yellow card in the 68th minute, one of several cautions in a competitive encounter that also saw bookings for San Jose’s Reid Roberts and Austin’s early scorer Rosales.
San Jose completed the comeback in the 78th minute when Timo Werner converted from the penalty spot to give the Earthquakes a 2–1 lead. From there, the hosts ran away with the contest in a devastating final 10 minutes.
Preston Judd extended the advantage to 3–1 in the 83rd minute, finishing a move assisted by substitute Paul Marie. Just two minutes later, Ousseni Bouda made it 4–1, again with Marie providing the assist. The Earthquakes were not done yet: in the 88th minute, Judd struck his second of the night, once more set up by Marie, to seal a comprehensive 5–1 victory.
