Forest Hit Five as Sunderland Suffer Heavy Home Defeat
Nottingham Forest delivered a ruthless away performance to crush Sunderland AFC 5–0 in Premier League action on matchday 34, sealing the contest with a four-goal burst before half-time.
The visitors were handed an early advantage on 17 minutes when Sunderland defender Trai Hume diverted the ball into his own net, giving Forest a 1–0 lead. That setback visibly shook the hosts, and Forest capitalised with a devastating 20-minute spell.
Chris Wood doubled the advantage in the 31st minute, finishing after being set up by Morgan Gibbs-White. Just three minutes later, Gibbs-White turned scorer, making it 3–0 following an assist from Igor Jesus as Sunderland unraveled at the back.
Forest refused to ease off. In the 37th minute, Igor Jesus added his name to the scoresheet with Forest’s fourth goal, effectively ending the contest before the break and leaving Sunderland with a mountain to climb in the second half.
Sunderland made changes at half-time, including the introduction of Reinildo for Chris Rigg, but Forest remained largely in control. The second period was punctuated by a series of yellow cards: Habib Diarra and Granit Xhaka were booked for Sunderland, while Nicolás Domínguez, Elliot Anderson, Igor Jesus, Neco Williams and Ryan Yates all saw yellow for Forest in a more stop–start half.
Forest still had time to add further gloss to the scoreline. In the fifth minute of stoppage time, Elliot Anderson struck their fifth goal, finishing a move assisted by substitute Taiwo Awoniyi to complete a resounding 5–0 victory.
This result underlines Forest’s attacking potency and leaves Sunderland reflecting on a punishing evening.
