Doncaster Rovers strike after the break to sink Northampton in League One
Doncaster Rovers produced a ruthless second‑half display to beat Northampton Town 3–1 away from home in League One on Saturday, with all four goals arriving after half-time.
Following a goalless opening 45 minutes, Doncaster broke the deadlock five minutes after the restart. Elliot Lee struck in the 50th minute to give the visitors a 1–0 lead, setting the tone for a dominant spell from Grant McCann’s side.
Seven minutes later, Doncaster doubled their advantage. In the 57th minute, Hakeeb Adelakun finished a move created by Owen Bailey, whose assist released the forward to make it 2–0 and tighten the visitors’ grip on the contest.
Northampton, who had Jack Burroughs booked late in the first half, turned to the bench just after the hour mark, making a double change on 64 minutes and further triple substitutions on 73 minutes in an attempt to shift the momentum. Doncaster also freshened things up, with George Broadbent replacing Harry Clifton in the 75th minute.
Broadbent made his mark in stoppage time. In the 90th minute plus three, he added Doncaster’s third, finishing from a pass by Brandon Hanlan to push the scoreline to 3–0 and cap a clinical away performance.
Northampton grabbed a late consolation when Cameron McGeehan scored in the 90th minute plus six, but it was too little, too late for the hosts. The match also featured a flurry of yellow cards, with Dean Campbell, Nesta Guinness-Walker, Jake Evans and Elliott List all cautioned for Northampton, while Thimothee Lo‑Tutala and Robbie Gotts went into the book for Doncaster.
The result leaves Doncaster celebrating a valuable away win on matchday 44 of the League One campaign, while Northampton are left to reflect on a damaging second half.
