AVS Hold Sporting CP to 1–1 Draw After Lima Cancels Out Nel Opener

AVS earned a valuable point against title-chasing Sporting Clube de Portugal with a 1–1 draw on Primeira Liga matchday 31, responding well after falling behind early in the second half.

Following a goalless opening 45 minutes, Sporting CP broke the deadlock shortly after the restart. In the 47th minute, Rafael Nel finished off a move created by Georgios Vagiannidis, putting the visitors 1–0 up and briefly tilting the contest in favour of the Lisbon side.

AVS refused to fold and found their route back into the match midway through the half. In the 66th minute, Pedro Lima converted from the penalty spot to level the score at 1–1, setting up a tense final stretch with both teams pushing for a winner.

The hosts had to manage the game carefully after a series of bookings. Gustavo Mendonça went into the referee’s book as early as the 12th minute, followed by a yellow card for Babatunde Akinsola on the stroke of half-time. Deep into stoppage time, Adriel Ramos was also cautioned, while Daniel Bragança saw yellow for Sporting CP in the 90th minute.

Both coaches turned to their benches in search of a decisive edge. Sporting CP introduced Geny Catamo and Luis Suárez on 57 minutes, later bringing on Maximiliano Araújo, Luis Guilherme and Bragança. AVS responded with changes of their own, including Tiago Galletto, Oscar Perea, Guillem Molina, Nenê and Ponck entering the fray in the second half.
